The War of the Rose Part III: The Day

February 14, 1995  Tuesday

Today was a great day!  I got up at six and was at school by seven.  Then I placed the flower and note in her locker.  I was very excited.  Hoke was sick and was not a school.

I asked Leslie, later, if she had gotten a Valentine from anyone at the start of 4th hour.  She said no.  Then I asked if anyone else had gotten one.  She said Emma received a flower.  “Really?” I said.

I didn’t hear much more until lunch.  I was in line and Ann Writemark was asking guys in line who had gotten Emma the rose.  The guys in turn asked if the girls could tell by the handwriting.  No.  I just smiled as I walked by.

Every hour a few girls would crowd around Emma’s locker to look at her rose.  She still doesn’t know it’s me.  I talked to her in the office.  I said I was getting my license in a week, probably.  She can’t get hers until July, she lamented.

People did some really nice things for me.  Sidney Walls gave almost the entire sophomore class bags of candy.  My homeroom made a card for me that all signed. I had a great birthday.  It may not have been glitzy or glamorous, but I am fully content with my sixteenth birthday.

P.S.– Nicole wanted to be in my journal, so Nicole says “hi.”
